Biographical Information:

Jan works at the Council on Postsecondary Education as the Executive Director for the Kentucky Community Learning Network (KCLN), a statewide, regionally based, training program for all state human services employees in partnership with three of the Commonwealth’s universities. As a former faculty member for 16 years at the high school and college levels, she taught Literature, Composition, Language Arts, and AP English classes at multiple institutions before transitioning to Student Affairs. She brings 12 years and a variety of experience from large, public universities, a small private college, and the community college level where she managed the Experiential Learning & Career Services Center and taught the First-Year seminar as well as classes on Career Readiness and Experiential Education. 

Jan is a proud, first-generation, graduate of Virginia Tech and Western Kentucky University who has worked with orientation, student conduct, residence life, career services, Greek life, student organizations, counseling and advising services, as well as experiential education, training, & development. Jan is active in regional, state, and national professional organizations and is passionate about helping learners attain access and success in their personal, professional, and academic endeavors.

Biographical Information

Brian Bourke, Ph.D., is a faculty member and Program Coordinator in the Postsecondary Education master’s and P-20 Leadership doctoral programs. He teaches courses on research methods and assessment, student characteristics and development, and the organization and administration of higher education. Through his scholarship, Brian explores issues pertaining to the experiences of students of color in predominantly White institutions, and the evolution of professional values in student affairs. Prior to joining the professoriate in 2007, Brian worked in residence life for several years.

President-Elect: Steve Stauffer

Biographical Information

Steve Stauffer is the Director of Facilities Planning and Resources for the Office for Student Success at the University of Kentucky.  In this role, he directs planning, renovation and construction of facilities and office space as well as the day-to-day management of all facilities for Student Success, which is composed of approximately 30 Student Affairs units and 400 staff members.  In addition, he serves as the primary point of contact for UK Facilities Management and Physical Plant as well as for students, faculty, and staff for facility, operational, and emergency issues. 

Prior to his current position, Steve served in the Office of Residence Life in a variety of roles, including Associate Director of Operations, Assistant Director, and Area Coordinator.  Before working at UK, he served as an Area Coordinator at Eastern Kentucky University as well as an undergraduate Resident Assistant at Transylvania University. 

Professionally, Steve has been involved in a variety of roles in multiple organizations, including the Kentucky Association of Housing Officers (KAHO) as president, state representative, and conference host; and in the Southeastern Association of Housing Officers (SEAHO) as president and conference host.

Steve and his wife April have two sons, Caleb and Samuel, who are in the Spanish Immersion Program at Bryan Station High School in Lexington.

Biographical Information

Dr. Aaron W. Hughey is a University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Counseling and Student Affairs at Western Kentucky University, where he oversees the graduate degree program in Student Affairs in Higher Education. Before joining the faculty in 1991, he spent 10 years in progressive administrative positions, including five years as the Associate Director of University Housing at WKU. He was also Head of the Department of Counseling and Student Affairs for five years before returning to the faculty full-time in 2008. Dr. Hughey has degrees from the University of Tennessee at Martin, the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, Western Kentucky University, and Northern Illinois University. He has authored (or co-authored) over 70 refereed publications on a wide range of issues including leadership and student development, counseling, standardized testing, diversity, legal issues, and educational administration. He regularly presents at national and international conferences and consults extensively with companies and schools. He also provides training and professional development programs on a variety of topics centered on enhancing student success.
